17-4PH · Precipitation-Hardening Chromium-Nickel-Copper Steel
The most widely used precipitation-hardening chromium-nickel stainless steel with copper addition – high corrosion resistance combined with high strength and hardness. Tennant Metall supplies 17-4PH in tested quality ex stock Herne – for aerospace, marine, energy and food industries.
What is 17-4PH?
17-4PH (material number 1.4548) is one of the most popular and widely used stainless chromium-nickel alloy steels with copper addition, precipitation hardened with a martensitic structure. It offers high corrosion resistance combined with high strength properties and can be used in the temperature range from –29 °C to 343 °C.
The corrosion resistance of 17-4PH is comparable to 1.4301, at significantly higher strength. The material is weldable (in the annealed condition) and can be nitrided to produce a hardened surface layer. Tennant Metall supplies the grade solution annealed or in various aged conditions (H900 to H1150), on request including machining and a 3.1 mill certificate per EN 10204.

2 · Mechanical Properties
H900–H1150| Condition | Rm min. | Rp0.2 min. | A min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| H900 | 1310 N/mm² | 1170 N/mm² | 10 % |
| H1025 | 1070 N/mm² | 1000 N/mm² | 12 % |
| H1075 | 1000 N/mm² | 862 N/mm² | 13 % |
| H1100 | 965 N/mm² | 795 N/mm² | 14 % |
| H1150 | 930 N/mm² | 725 N/mm² | 16 % |
Typical values per AMS 5622 / ASTM A564 for the aged condition. In the solution-annealed condition (Condition A) the material is comparatively soft and readily machinable.
3 · Heat Treatment
Typical Values| Solution Annealing | 1025–1060 °C, air |
| Aging H900 | 482 °C, 1 h, air |
| Aging H1025–H1150 | 550–621 °C, 4 h, air |
Typical values per AMS 5622. Lower aging temperature (H900) = highest strength; higher temperature (H1150) = higher toughness and better stress-corrosion-cracking resistance.
