What Is 25CrMo4?
25CrMo4 (material number 1.7218, also known as 25CD4 or Chromoly) is a low-alloy chromium-molybdenum quenched-and-tempered steel. Its combination of high strength, good toughness and weldability makes it one of the most requested materials in motorsport, aerospace and general engineering.
After heat treatment, 25CrMo4 reaches tensile strengths of 650–850 N/mm² with a minimum elongation of 18 %. The material is readily cold-formable and hardenable, and can be reliably welded and brazed with appropriate pre- and post-heating. Our tube is used to build roll cages, chassis and suspension components, shafts, and structural and connecting elements for aerospace applications.
Our tubes are hot rolled, cold drawn and heat treated to our in-house specification TE012, which covers the requirements of 1.7214.9 and 25CD4S and, in mechanical properties, complies with SAE 4130 / MIL-T-6736 (N) with controlled carbon content.

What Is 25CrMo4 Used For?
The balanced combination of strength, toughness, weight and weldability makes 25CrMo4 tube the standard material for safety-critical structural components.
Motorsport & Racing
Roll cages, chassis and suspension frames for rally, circuit racing and karting. Good weldability and flexibility make 25CrMo4 the FIA-recognised standard material for safety cages.
Aerospace & Defence
Structural components, landing-gear elements and frame parts where high strength at low weight is required. Comparable properties to SAE 4130 / MIL-T-6736 (N).
Mechanical & Automotive Engineering
Shafts, crankshafts, fasteners, vehicle frames and other highly loaded structural elements. Good hardenability allows strength to be tailored to the component.
Bicycle & Motorcycle Frame Building
Light, stiff frame tubing for racing and performance bicycles as well as motorcycle frames — high strength with thin-walled, weight-optimised design.
Cylinders & Pressure Applications
Tube for the safe transport of pressurised gases, as well as hydraulic and pneumatic systems with demanding load requirements.
Defence & Special Vehicles
Structural components for armoured and protected vehicles as well as military applications, where strength and toughness under load are critical.

25CrMo4 Tube — FAQ
What is the material number of 25CrMo4?
25CrMo4 carries the material number 1.7218 (also known as 25CD4 or 25CD4S). Our tube is supplied to Tennant's in-house specification TE012, whose chemical analysis and mechanical properties meet the requirements of 1.7214.9 and 25CD4S.
Is 25CrMo4 weldable?
Yes, 25CrMo4 is generally readily weldable, which is why it is widely used for roll cages and frame construction. Given its carbon and alloy content, pre- and post-heating is recommended for larger wall thicknesses to avoid cold cracking in the heat-affected zone.
What tensile strength does the tube achieve?
In the heat-treated condition, our 25CrMo4 tube to TE012 achieves a tensile strength of 650–850 N/mm² with a minimum proof strength Rp0.2 of 520 N/mm² and a minimum elongation of 18 %.
Which dimensions are available from stock?
We hold 53 dimensions of seamless 25CrMo4 tube with around 28,800 metres constantly in stock, from 10 x 1.0 mm to 60 x 1.0 mm. Special dimensions and profiles such as tear-drop or square tube are sourced at short notice on request.
